Department Name Change

Religious Education is the new title of our office, and faith formation and catechesis are what we do! We have a different name and email this year, but our dedication to forming our families in faith is the same.

We look forward to spending the next year with you in
the service of Jesus Christ!

Faith and Life Curriculum
This year, we will use continue to use the curriculum package we introduced last year, Faith and Life from Ignatius Press. In addition to the textbooks, we will be using the companion workbooks to help the students dive more deeply into the material.

  • Please note that we have added some new fields to our registration form to aid the Parish Office in properly recording sacramental information when the time comes:
    • Mother’s Maiden Name
    • City and State of birth for each registered child
  • Additionally, we are requesting copies of all incoming student’s Baptismal certificates, even if the Sacrament of Baptism was performed here. If your child will be receiving the Sacrament of First Holy Communion this year and you did not previously send in a Baptismal certificate (from St. Petronille or another Catholic church), we will be contacting you early in the year regarding sacramental records.
  • We have added a Special Sacrament Preparation option for those students, Grades 3 through 8, who require additional instruction outside of weekly grade level religious education classes to prepare for one or more sacraments. If you have an older student that is missing one or more sacraments, please contact Julie Knox to discuss an Individual Sacrament Plan for your child.
  • To help streamline tuition, we are capping tuition at the rate for 3 enrolled students. If you are registering more than 3 students in regular religious education instruction, you will only pay the 3 student rate, except for any additional grade level fees.
  • We will still be offering a $50 discount for families that register prior to July 1, 2021. Early registration is extremely helpful for us in planning our year and recruiting adequate numbers of catechists.
  • Please provide a check for half of the tuition with your registration.

Tuition Assistance – Faith Fund

  • Please do not delay your registration due to financial difficulty. Complete your registration forms, call the Religious Education Office, and we will help you. The Faith Fund, established by the Faith Formation Board, provides the option to reduce or waive tuition for those who need help.
  • In your generosity, please consider providing a donation to the Faith Fund. 100% of your donation will fund tuition for families in need, at the discretion of the Director or Pastor.

Volunteer Form – Catechist Recruitment

  • Catechists and Catechist Assistants are needed for our online program and gathered sessions.
  • Discounted tuition rates are available to those who volunteer – see page 2 on the registration form.
  • All volunteers are required to complete the Protecting God’s Children course through VIRTUS, which is being offered ONLINE until further notice.

Sacramental Preparation

According to the Diocese of Joliet, two years of sacramental preparation are required before receiving sacraments. Please call the Religious Education Office with questions or concerns.

  • Grades 1 and 2 are required preparation for First Reconciliation and First Holy Communion.
  • Grades 7 and 8 are required preparation for Confirmation.

The Church has always considered catechesis as one of her primary tasks, for, before Christ ascended to the Father after his Resurrection, he gave the Apostles a final command – to make disciples of all nations and to teach them to observe all that he had commanded…Very soon the name of catechesis was given to the whole of the efforts within the Church to make disciples, to help people to believe that Jesus is the Son of God, so that believing they might have life in his name, and to educate and instruct them in this life and thus build up the Body of Christ. The Church has not ceased to devote her energy to this task.

Religious Education can only continue its varied programs with the help of many parishioners. A variety of volunteer opportunities are available for members of the parish to share their time and talent with the children and the catechetical staff. If you are able to help, please contact the office.

The Diocese of Joliet requires all St. Petronille volunteers who work with children to attend a child sexual abuse awareness program called Protecting God’s Children. For information on attending one of these sessions, contact the RE Office, 858-3796 ext. 4000. or register online

Just a friendly reminder that treats for the class are not to be sent. Please help us keep this a safe environment for our students with allergies.

Class cancellation in District 41 automatically cancels classes for students of the St. Petronille Religious Education Program. Should St. Petronille cancel classes, an e-mail will be sent to each registered family from the Office of Religious Education, and if there is time, it will also be posted on the website.
